Samuel Nicholas

1744 - 1790

Samuel Nicholas was expelled from this Quaker worship community for “learning the Art of War” in the Continental Marines, the precursor to the U.S. Marine Corps, during the American Revolution.

Nicholas became a member of the Religious Society of Free Quakers, and their meetinghouse is located on Arch Street, just one block away from here.

Nicholas is buried here at ASMH, but this gravestone is not original. His official resting place on the property is unknown, so this memorial gravestone was made by the U.S. Marines in 2011.
