Why Were There So Many Meetinghouses?

Meetinghouses changed as the Quaker population of Philadelphia grew. Some buildings were expanded, others moved to better locations, and some were sold and demolished to raise funds for new meeting houses.

Arch Street, where Arch Street Meeting House is located, was once called Mulberry Street. The name formally changed in 1854.
