Anthony Benezet

1713 - 1784


Anthony Benezet was a French Quaker, teacher, and avid abolitionist. He opened Philadelphia’s first school for girls and led Quakers to open the first school for Philadelphia's free Black population. 

He self-published many pamphlets on anti-slavery and was a founding member of the first Philadelphia Anti-Slavery Society.
